JAZZ IS DEAD.
•WHY is “jazz” a restrictive label that expresses a “colonialist mentality”?
•WHAT is #BAM and why is it causing a revolution throughout musical culture?
•HOW is acknowledgement of tradition paramount to innovation?
•WHEN and how is the artist liberated from social constructs?
•WHO is the Savior of Archaic Pop?
Meet Nicholas Payton, the man behind the enigma, who discusses these ideas and beyond on this week’s edition of The Phoenix. In addition to listening to this phenomenally inspiring interview, tune in to enjoy the cool sounds of Payton’s new album #BAM Live at Bohemian Caverns.
Kick back and tune in to The Phoenix on WNYU.org, every Thursday from 12noon to 2pm. Only on www.wnyu.org.

Jack - - New Afternoon Show
Don’t get me wrong, I love house music. But it’s hard for me to ignore the gap between what I hear in the 4/4 and what it compels me to do. I want a melody, a message, that reminds me of why I’m dancing in the first place. An excuse to let go.
Deep house, a curious subgenre of dance music, compensates for this. It’s not fair for me to assert that it is unique in its incorporation of subdued melodies in minor keys and intricate percussion, in comparison to house, trance and other dance genres, but the genre appears to define itself by these measures. It’s nice to see a marriage of the syncopation and fun of traditional house with the sentimentality and weight of trance.
It’s a genre with an objective.
